The Mainz artist Lore Bert is known for her works on paper. She processes the material of her choice in a wide variety of ways, including making collages with different types of paper, creating gouaches or placing countless small, folded papers on wooden picture carriers in order to create the fascinating large-format relief objects for which she is particularly known.
In this film, Dr. Dorothea van der Koelen brings these colossal works closer to the audience. What steps are necessary to create these Masterpieces? What materials does Lore Bert use? What are the principles of your compositions? These and other facets of the artistic creative process that the artist – who, by the way, is celebrating her 85th birthdaythis year – is still facing every day in one of her studios.
The Darmstadt-born artist has been revising and refining her techniques for almost half a century and – based on her first national exhibitions – has conquered the globe and the international art world for herself.
In contrast to other important figures in the art world, however, she also moves off the beaten track. She not only strolls over the red carpets of London, Paris or New York, but also treads the dusty streets of Kathmandu in Nepal or marveled at the natural beauty of Iceland during her stay in Reykjavik. These diverse impressions – captured in the monumental publication Lore Bert · Walking through a Life (see literature recommendations below) – enrich her and of course also find expression in her art, which is so colorful and varied due to this wide range of experiences.
