Artists

The Mainz artist Lore Bert (*1936) is a master of paper. She works with her preferred material in many different ways. She creates pictorial objects from thousands of ‘crumpled’ squares of Japanese paper, gouaches in soft earthy colours, colourful collages or cotton wool-filled transparencies made from paper cushions.

Hans Jörg Glattfelder, born in Zurich in 1939, is regarded throughout Europe as one of the important further thinkers of Concrete Art. In a certain sense, Glattfelder belongs to the circle of the Zurich Concretists, although the 1939-born is a generation younger and—what is perhaps even more important—there are no right angles in his work, but actually only visions of right angles and squares are created. The square only arises in the imagination of the viewer.

Mohammed Kazem (*1969), the shooting star from the United Arab Emirates, has enriched the Arab art world for many years. His works, which cover a broad spectrum from painterly execution to sculptures and installations, often deal with positions and locations. Where things and places are—absolute and relative to each other—are questions that preoccupy the artist.

Joseph Kosuth has gone down in history as the pioneer of Concept Art. With his ground-breaking artwork One and Three Chairs, consisting of a chair, the image of a chair and the definition of chair, he created one of the main works of that particular field of art.

Water is the major theme of the Venetian by choice Fabrizio Plessi (*1940). His works always revolve around the life-giving element, which challenges him but also allows itself to be transformed and worked on by him. Plessi occupies a unique position in video art, of which he is the founder and pioneer.

The Italian ZERO artist Turi Simeti (*1929) is known for his monochrome works with minimalist and clear forms. Typical for him are the ovals that adorn his works. They rise from the canvas and lift his works from the second to the third dimension.

The German ZERO artist Günther Uecker is internationally known for his nail paintings. He creates works of impressive intensity by applying the metal pins to the picture support and then working on them with paint. Less well known are his watercolours and his embossed prints.

Gallery

The first gallery of Dorothea van der Koelen was founded in 1979 in Mainz under the name Galerie Dorothea van der Koelen. After her studies of art history, philosophy, book science, logic and Italian literature at the Gutenberg-University in Mainz—parallel to her galleries—she was graduated to a PhD in Philology.

1988 she opened a second exhibition space in the industrial area of the city of Mainz, called Dammweg Art Hall, followed by a third gallery in Venice, called La Galleria, opened parallel to the Venice Art Biennale in 2001. Beside the 3 galleries Dr. Dorothea van der Koelen founded, together with her brother Martin, in 1995 a publishing house for art books called Chorus-Verlag and set up in 2003 the non-profit organisation Van der Koelen Foundation for Art and Science.

For this contribution to the cultural live of the City of Mainz she was awarded with the most prestigious Max-Slevogt-Medal.

In 2019 there were different anniversary shows in Mainz and Venice under the title Was — Is — Will be · 40 Years of Gallery. From the mayor of the City of Mainz she was awarded with the famous Gutenberg-statuette.
