Lore Bert is particularly known for her fascinating relief-objects made of fine Japanese paper in various colors, sometimes accompanied by precious 24-carat gold leaf. After the complex mathematical-geometric construction of the work, the hard-working employees spend months of precision work gluing thousands and thousands of small Japanese paper flowers onto it, which are specially cut, colored and twisted to finally create an impressive work of art.
A lesser-known – but nevertheless important – group of works in Lore Bert’s œuvre are her Banners. For these works, the artist folds two sheets of the delicate Japanese paper she loves so much evenly vertically and horizontally to create a grid.
The resulting squares of the overlapping sheets are then glued together and the resulting pockets are filled by Ewelina, Lore Bert’s knowledgeable assistant, with carefully cut square pieces of absorbent cotton in detailed and precise manual work.
The result is a surface of small, cotton-filled cushions that elevate the soft and elegant appearance of the Japanese paper into the third dimension through the curvature of the cushion shape. Lore Bert decorates the surface of this artfully shaped amalgam either with the familiar elements of her own formal language or with writing. Some of the particularly well-known banners, for example, show quotes from poets and thinkers who have particularly influenced the artist, such as Immanuel Kant or Rainer Maria Rilke.

Publications
In our video of the week, art historian and gallerist Dr. Dorothea van der Koelen takes viewers on a visit to the studio of the still highly productive Mainz-based artist. There she is currently working on two new multiples.
Just in time for the upcoming Art Karlsruhe, the first copies of the new editions will be completed and presented at the booth of Galerie Dr. Dorothea van der Koelen. This year, there is both a multiple picture object, the noble Golden Disc, and a multiple banner, Hope, inspired by the Holy Year proclaimed by the Pope, to choose from. As the editions are being published in small numbers, we have enclosed our order form for those who are quick to place pre-orders.
In the presence of the artist, the gallerist uses these new works to explain the process of creating those works, which were also presented to the interested art public in numerous group and solo exhibitions in renowned exhibition venues in Germany and abroad in 2024.
