Following the success of the first exhibition, Experiments I · 4+8+2 in 2015, the project series initiated by the ›van der Koelen Foundation for Art and Science‹ is entering another round. This year, eight art scholars from Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz and four young artists from the Mainz University of Art will again have the opportunity to jointly realize an exhibition in the Cadoro from August 14 to September 29, 2021, as well as the corresponding catalog.

The project series Experiments was launched in 2015 by the gallerist Dr. Dorothea van der Koelen and is intended to offer young, committed cultural workers the opportunity to expand their university education with practical training. The focus of the project is on the interdisciplinary collaboration between the artists Ruben Brückel, Helena Hafemann, Martina Lang, Philipp Neßler and the art scholars, Larissa Frömel, Jasmin Gnest, Nina Lermann, Jamie Mayland, Sophia Sarbinowski, Janina Schilder, Kira Schmitt and Antonio Quint Vila.

The aim of the event is to network young artists with scientists who are striving for a professional future in the art business and who can then continue to advise and support one another in the future. An important part of this networking is the joint design and publication of a catalog, which not only documents the exhibition, but also contains scientific texts on each artistic position. The four scientific contributions resulted from collaboration of two art historians each with one artist following several work meetings and studio visits. With this project, the participants not only get extraordinary insights into contemporary art, but they also learn how to coordinate and communicate with sponsors and press representatives. In addition, they are also involved in the curatorial design of the project. The participants in the project not only gain valuable experience for their future professional life, but also enrich the project in a lively exchange, which enables a unique insight into the respective other discipline.

The project Experiments IV · 4 + 8 is a cooperation between the Institute for Art History and Musicology at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz and the ›van der Koelen Foundation for Art and Science‹, which was founded in 2003 by the Mainz gallerist Dr. Dorothea van der Koelen. The foundation has been based in the ›CADORO - Center for Art and Science‹ in Mainz-Hechtsheim since November 2014, in which the exhibition space of the Gallery Dorothea van der Koelen with important works of contemporary art, the Chorus Publisher for Art and Science as well as the studio of the artist Lore Bert and her showroom are located. The ›van der Koelen Foundation for Art and Science‹ provides the young project team with the CADORO exhibition space for the Experiments IV · 4 + 8 exhibition and supports the project both ideally and financially.

The vernissage of the exhibition will take place on August 14, 2021 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will be opened with a greeting from the head of the state capital's cultural affairs department, Marianne Grosse, as well as an introduction by Prof. Dr. Matthias Müller, head of the Institute for Art History and Musicology at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz. During the duration of the exhibition, project members will supervise the exhibition so that visitors can get to know not only inspiring, contemporary works of art, but also artists and art scholars. On four Sundays, one of the four artists will also be available for a personal conversation. You can find the dates on our invitation card and on our website. Another highlight of the project is the presentation of the exhibition catalog, which will take place on September 29th at 4 p.m. in the CADORO together with the finissage of the ambitious exhibition project Experiments IV · 4 + 8 in the presence of all participants in the project.

Die Künstler und ihre Teams

Ruben Brückel
Ruben Brückel Sophia Sarbinowski, Nina Lermann & Maria Vogt

Martina Lang
Martina Lang Jasmin Gnest & Antonio Quint Vila
