As part of the exhibition project Experiments IV · 4 + 8, four young artists are exhibiting their work in the Cadoro – Center for Art and Science. Today's guest is: Philipp Neßler. The sculptor and installation artist from Mainz is studying at the Mainz University of Art in the sculpture class with Prof. Martin Schwenk.

Philipp Neßler's installation Effi addresses freedom, something that has long been taken for granted in our time, but has been hotly debated since the lockdown at the latest. Inspired by the novel of the same name by Theodor Fontane, the installation artist created swings in the exhibition space – swings as a symbol of freedom, just as Fontane's protagonist felt.

But quite apart from the fact that you shouldn't sit on art, Neßler's swings don't invite you to use them for another reason: they are made of paraffin wax, including deceptively real wood grain. In this way, the artist frees the everyday object swing from the ballast of its function and elevates it into the sphere of art. The idea for Neßler's environment gave him the playgrounds in his hometown Mainz, which were orphaned in times of pandemic and distance rules.

On Sunday, September 12th, 2021, Philipp Neßler will present himself to the interested audience for an artist talk in the Cadoro. From 12 p.m., friends of Gallery van der Koelen and anyone interested in art can get to know the artist and have their questions about his work answered.
