Lothar Quinte

Lothar Quinte (1923–2000) was a German painter and sculptor known for his contributions to the Op Art movement. Born in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, Quinte studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and later at the Art Academy in Munich.

In the 1950s, Quinte started experimenting with abstraction developing a unique style that would become the hallmark of his work. His paintings often featured geometric shapes and vibrant colours arranged in a rhythmic and harmonious way, creating an optical illusion that invited the viewer to engage with the artwork.

Quinte was particularly interested in the interplay between colour and light. His works often seem to shimmer and vibrate. He utilized various techniques to achieve these effects, including layering paint and using contrasting colors.

Quinte's work has been exhibited widely in Germany and internationally, and he was awarded numerous prizes and honours throughout his career. He was a member of the German Academy of Fine Arts and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, and his work can be found in many public and private collections around the world.

With our video of the week on the occasion of his 100th birthday, Dr Dorothea van der Koelen would like to honour Lothar Quinte's work and thank the artist for his long and fruitful collaboration.
