Heinz Gappmayr · Bipolar – Black and White in Dialog

In this week’s newsletter, we would like to introduce you to one more artist of the current exhibition Bipolar – Black and White in Dialogue: Heinz Gappmayr.

Heinz Gappmayr (1925–2010) is the main representative of visual poetry in the German-speaking world. Since the end of the 1960s, he made language the material of his work. Signs, words, numbers and basic geometric forms are visually presented by him in order to examine the categorical possibilities of language. Gappmayr uses language to depict ideas and concepts that cannot be represented visually due to their abstract nature.

It is not only in terms of content that his works fit very well into the current exhibition concept – in terms of colour, too. The text works – which are always black and white – seem to be made for our Bipolar show. In these works, he tries to make concepts vivid that are not themselves vivid but underlie all empirical knowledge. The two a priori concepts of time and space play a central role in Heinz Gappmayr's work.
