Experiments V · 4+8: Anna Karpekin

Notes and drawings are the starting point for many works of the artist Anna Karpekin. Whether through photos, the note app of her cell phone or in sketchbooks, which are bought in various places, but also partly self-made, the sculptor likes to record her thoughts. Be it in drawings, words or chains of words, her thoughts become lines on paper, which then become lines in space – her artistic works.

In 1997 Anna Karpekin was born in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan) and graduated in May 2023 with a Master of Education degree in Fine Arts and Russian. She studied in the sculpture class of Sabine Groß at the Kunsthochschule Mainz and works in various media, such as sculpture, installation, drawing and performance. She draws on her thoughts, associations, and memories and translates them in a humorous and playful way into works that are anything but classic exhibition pieces. The reverent viewing of a work of art with a certain safe distance, so as not to touch it, is reversed by Karpekin. Whereas before the sculptures stood on a stage as actors and were only looked at, this stage now dissolves and activates the viewer to actively decide whether to participate or merely to look at them from the outside.

Nor is there one work that can be used to describe Karpekin’s artistic work or which is particularly close to her heart. All works are like pieces of a puzzle that, when put together, provide insights into her view of things, her artistic work, and her aspirations as an artist.

My notes and drawings do not follow any logic, but are impulses that trigger processes. When the artistic process gets stuck and it feels impossible for me to make a decision, I dig them out again and they serve as a guide.

For our video of the week, Dr. Dorothea van der Koelen met with Anna Karpekin for an artist talk in the exhibition space at Cadoro Mainz. In it, the artist from Kazakhstan talks about the inspiration for her work and what drives her creative work.

In addition, next Sunday, September 3, 2023, at 12 p.m., there will be a public artist talk with Anna Karpekin at Cadoro – Center for Art and Science. We cordially invite all art lovers to attend the event, meet the artist in person and ask their own questions.
